Mrs Jane Balcombe came to New South Wales in 1824 with her husband, William, to take up his appointment as Colonial Treasurer. Their eldest daughter, Jane, died on the voyage. Their second daughter, Lucia Elizabeth, known as Betsy, accompanied them. - Scope and ContentIncludes references to St Helena, sympathy on the death of Jane and description of his studies at Edinburgh. A letter to Betsy follows after the conclusion of her mother's letter
