  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Harry Howard (1930-2000) was a prominent Sydney architect best known for his landscape design. Born in Sydney, Harry Stanton Howard grew up in Gordon. He graduated in architecture from the University of Sydney, and completed a diploma in town and country planning. He worked briefly in the office of Sydney Ancher, and then for many years with the progressive firm Edwards Madigan Torzillo. His first commission, a House for a Young Couple and a House for a Retired Couple on a double lot in East Gordon, was exhibited at the arts festival of the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956. During the 1960s, he worked on the site design and landscape development of many schools and also taught design part-time in the School of Architecture at the University of NSW.

Howard was a member of the influential group of architects known as the Sydney School. Their shared sense of purpose found expression in the unique environment of 7 Ridge Street, North Sydney, a building conceived by Howard and Bruce Rickard as a series of professional studios and designed by Ian McKay. At one time the building contained the offices of Harry Seidler, Bruce Mackenzie, Bruce Rickard, Harry Howard, Peter Myers, and the studios of designer Gordon Andrews and photographer David Moore. Howard served on the Council of the NSW Chapter of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects from 1970 to 1984, and was an elected member of the NSW Board of Architects in the 1970s.

He was a foundation member of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects. In 1978 he was commissioned to design the landscape setting of the High Court of Australia and the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra. He produced numerous other major works in association with Barbara Buchanan including Sawmillers Reserve at McMahons Point and the landscape of the Australian Film & Television School at North Ryde. Through the use of native plants Howard was also influential in shaping a distinctive form of landscape in a number of municipalities in Sydney, particularly Lane Cove where he was retained as a consultant landscape architect by Lane Cove Council for 20 years. In 1996 he received the Australian Award from the Australian Institute of Architects for his lifework.

Harry Howard died in Sydney in 2000, aged 69.
