  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

William Kopsen, 1847-1930, nee Bror Gustaf Wilhelm Kopsen, was born in Vaxholm, Sweden. In 1868 he left Sweden and in London boarded the ship Sahra Grice for Australia. In 1870 he settled in Fiji where he became a leader in the commercial, political and social life of the colony. In 1882 he was appointed Swedish Consul in Fiji. In 1889 he settled in Sydney. He pioneered the usage of the native ashwood as a timber for oars for the sailing vessels and thereby established a wood manufacturing industry. This was a new industry in Australia and it enabled Australia not only to be independent of outside sources but capable of competing in world markets.
