  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    William Caswell, 1789, 1859, was impressed into the Royal Navy in 1805, retiring on half pay in 1828. In 1830 he and his family settled on fifty acres of land at Tarilba, Port Stephens, NSW, where he established a farm. John Edward Stacy, 1799-1881, became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1820, and was appointed surgeon to the Australian Agricultural Company at Port Stephens in 1828, a position he held until 1836. In 1839 he established a practice near Port Macquarie, NSW. From 1848-1855 he filled the post of Colonial Surgeon at Newcastle, NSW. In 1860 Stacy set up in practice at Toowoomba, Queensland, eventually becoming a magistrate as well as visiting surgeon to the gaol. He returned to England in 1871. George Shelley, 1812-1852, moved to the Tumut district, NSW in 1829 and settled at Bombowlee Station. He died in Melbourne, Victoria, of typhoid contracted on a droving trip, leaving a widow to look after three sons and five daughters
