  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Baird (1834-1894) was an amateur sculptor who carved objects in kerosene shale, which was primarily mined around Hartley, N.S.W.. Little is known of his life except that he worked as a postman in Sydney. Baird does not appear to have exhibited his work.

  • Scope and Content
    A carved statuette, possibly a bookend, of William Shakespeare. A full-length robed Shakespeare has been carved leaning against a lectern or desk. His right arm rests on the lecturn, and his left hand with pointed index finger rests on his bearded chin. The statuette, carved from one piece, stands on a base approx. 7.0 cm high.
