Arthur Bowes Smyth, born in England, 1750, practised as a surgeon at Tolleshunt D'Arcy between 1778 and 1783. In 1787 he was appointed a surgeon in the Lady Penrhyn in the First Fleet. He took charge of the prisoners when the convict's surgeon, Dr. Alltree, became ill at Teneriffe. Under the name of Arthur Bowes, he kept a journal which included an account of the events of the voyage out and the first few weeks in New South Wales, as well as describing bird life around Port Jackson and Lord Howe Island which the Lady Penrhyn visited on the return journey. He died in 1790 - Description source
