Captain Gaby started work on the Sydney waterfront in 1922 as a foreman stevedore. In 1939 he became an Industrial Officer in the Overseas Shipping Representatives Association. In 1941, he started work at the Sydney Stevedoring and Wool Dumping Company, of which he subsequently became manager.
