    Alexander Laing, born ca. 1791, came from Scotland in 1814 as a gardener and overseer, working in the Sorell district from 1815-1819 mainly for T. A. Lascelles. From 1820-1839 he held government appointments at Sorell as District Constable, gaoler, storekeeper and postmaster, and to ca. 1857 at New Norfolk in turn as gaoler and as wardsman in the Hospital for the Insane
