George Wyndham arrived in New South Wales from England with his wife Margaret in 1827. They settled at Branxton in the Hunter valley and named the property Dalwood. At Dalwood the Wyndhams began experimental farming, including viticulture. Wyndham became a pioneer of the Australian wine industry and his enterprises were successful until the 1840s when depression gripped the colonies. When conditions became too difficult Wyndham moved the family to properties first near Kyogle and then to Bukkulla near Inverell. When the colonial economy improved he returned to Dalwood and resumed wine-making operations. George was later joined by his son John who eventually took over management of the property and oversaw the growth of Dalwood Vineyard into one of Australia's leading wine producers until his death in 1887. Dalwood's wines were internationally acclaimed, receiving many prizes and trophies at local and international exhibitions, including bronze and silver medals in the Paris International Exhibition of 1867.

In 1901 J.F.M. Wilkinson bought the Dalwood Vineyards and immediately onsold the house and 52 ha of the property. In 1904 he sold the remaining property to Frank Penfold-Hyland who then sold the property in the early 1960s to Perc McGuigan. In 1968 his son Brian re-named the property Wyndham Estate. McGuigan later acquired the remainder of the original Dalwood property thus restoring the original vineyard. In 1970 Wyndham Estate was sold to a syndicate headed and managed by Brian McGuigan. In 1990 Pernod Ricard purchased Wyndham Estate and in 2010 launched its new wine brand company Premium Wine Brands - Pernod Ricard (formerly Pernod Ricard Pacific).

This collection was found at a rubbish tip in Cessnock sometime in the mid-1960s. It was passed on to local coal miner Bill Chapman, who later realised the significance of the documents and contacted the operations manager of Wyndham Estate, Stephen Guilbaud-Oulton. Mr Guilbaud-Oulton purchased the documents from Mr Chapman, and as a representative of Pernod Ricard Pacific donated the collection to the Library.

This collection of approximately 3500 documents relates to the operation of the Dalwood Vineyards (later Wyndham Estate) in the Hunter Valley, N.S.W. It details the running of a significant colonial vineyard involving the transportation and distribution of wine by rail from Branxton, and includes correspondence with Australian and overseas customers.
