  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The Dutch East India Company was founded by charter to regulate Dutch trade in the Indian Ocean, where it had a monopoly of trade. It was also empowered to maintain armed forces, erect forts and factories, wage wars and enter into treaties in the name of the States General, coin money and wield full administrative, judicial and legislative authority over its operations. Its head-quarters was established in 1619 at Batavia, and by the mid-seventeenth century the Company had monopolised trade in the Indian Ocean

    Spine title 'Statute Van Batavia'
    Statutes, by-laws and ordinances of the city of Batavia. Apears to have been authorised by Antony Van Diemen, Governor General, but it is uncertain who was actually responsible for it. It is listed in J. A. Van der Chijs' 'Inventoris Van 'slands archief te Batavia (1602-1816)'
    Preceding the actual statutes are 4 pages of authorisation by Van Diemen
