  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Cedric Raymond Emanuel (1906-1995) studied at both the Royal Society, with artist Dattilo Rubbo and with Julian Ashton, and learnt etching from Sydney Long. He is best known for his pencil sketches, etchings and watercolours of Sydney city and surrounding suburbs, many of which were popularised on cards, calendars and wrapping paper.

  • Scope and Content
View showing Queen's Square from an elevated position looking down on the roof and spire of St James' Church, Hyde Park Barracks, Queen Victoria's statue and the Queen's Club building.

Emanuel needled (drew) the etching in sections. "The first drawing for the etching was done from the roof of David Jones, Elizabeth Street, at mid-day. The result was unsatisfactory so I re-drew it about five in the afternoon when the long shadows gave a more dramatic effect."
