    James Whitmore Hill, was born and educated in Melbourne and trained as an architect in the Public Works Department of Victoria. He moved to Sydney in 1881 and established offices in Sydney and Parramatta. He supervised the construction of both public and domestic buildings.

    Mr. Hill was secretary of the Australian Natives' Association in New South Wales for a period between 1889 and 1897. This association was founded as a Friendly Society in Melbourne in 1872. The Association was formed in New South Wales in 1885. In the period 1889-1898 the Association was involved in promoting Federation as a means of advancing the welfare of Australia and its people. Sir Henry Parkes is reported to have pressed Mr. Hill to stand for election to the New South Wales Parliament but he did not do so. Mr. Hill died in December, 1952
