  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Edmund Thomas Blacket, 1817-1883, arrived in Sydney, N.S.W. in November 1842 and shortly afterward set himself up as an architect and surveyor. He worked particularly for the Anglican Church and was soon known as the Diocesan Architect. In 1849 he was appointed Colonial Architect but returned to private practice in 1854 in order to design the University of Sydney. His practice flourished with an enormous number and variety of commissions for church, institutional, commercial, industrial and domestic buildings.

In 1880, Edmund's third son Cyril, 1857-1937, who had entered his father's office as a pupil in 1872, became a partner and the firm was known as Blacket and Son until Edmund's death in February 1883. Cyril then took his elder brother Arthur, 1848-1928, as junior partner. Blacket Brothers operated until around the end of 1885 when Cyril's health collapsed and he moved to the South Coast, N.S.W. Arthur completed the firm's current commissions and established his own business as an architect and surveyor, retiring around 1896. Cyril meanwhile had returned to Sydney and his architectural practice. In the period 1905-1907 he collaborated with William Baptist Wall and designed a number of buildings as Blacket and Wall. In 1911 his son Pendrill Cyril, 1885-1958, became a partner and the firm was once again known as Blacket and Son
