  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Allnutts & Arbouin were wine merchants in Mark Lane, London, with connections in Cognac, France. Barber & Barker were also London wine merchants with Australian colonial connections. Written at the beginning of the colonial gold rush, this letter is an example of how the gold rushes presented opportunities for businessmen and entrepreneurs as well as those who sought their fortune from mining.

  • Scope and Content
The letter (2 pages) reports on the burgeoning markets opening up in New South Wales and Victoria owing to the rapidly increasing population in the wake of the colonial gold rushes. It documents the emergence of a potential new market, and describes a strategy for capitalising on the needs of that market. It contains an outline of possible shipments and prices and predicts with confidence that 'a very large and profitable business with the Australian Colonies' could be attained.
