  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Frank Mumford Trist was a playwright and president of P.E.N. His wife Margaret Trist (nee Lucas) (1914-1986) was a well known author. They had two children, Leslie Joseph Trist and Naelo Dorothy Trist. Frank's brother, Leslie Joseph 'Dexter' Trist, was a pilot and pioneered flights to the New Guinea gold fields. He died in a plane crash in the jungles of New Guinea in 1931.

    1. Photographs of Frank and Les (Dexter) Trist, family and friends, including fellow pilot Frank Drayton. Includes photographs of places around Sydney, Royal National Park, Coogee Beach, Stanwell Park and Deniliquin (Queensland), and aerial views of Sydney. Some photographs of his time in New Guinea as a pilot (ca. 1930). Also photographs of the shipwreck of the Malabar at Long Bay in 1931. On inside cover are two pencil sketches of Eric Edmonds and Norm Rice, both drawn by Norm Rice. (approx. 223 photographs)
    2. Photographs of Les (Dexter) Trist in New Guinea, some as RAAF pilot, others as pilot to the goldfields. Includes photographs of family and indigenous people of New Guinea. Also includes a photograph of Francesco de Pinedo and Ernesto Campanelli, Italian aviators, possibly 1925. (approx. 428 photographs)

    1. Album of photographs of Les (Dexter) Trist and the scene of his crash in New Guinea, with reports and map relating to the search.
    2. Album of photographs of Les (Dexter) Trist in the Pacific Islands when he was Flight Sergeant during first RAAF overseas flight in 1926. First page has a sketch of a seaplane with inscription: 'This is no fish, but a seamonster'. Includes a menu for 'Dinner to officers of the Royal Australian Air Force on the occasion of the first flight to the Pacific Islands', 1926, with autographs on back. Also a copy of the Philatelic Bulletin, Dec. 1976 (cover story: 'RAAF's first overseas flight remembered') ( 93 photographs)
    3. Album with loose pages (in archival folder). Photographs of Lae aerodrome in 1930, and 'Studies of New Guinea Cannibals'. Includes photos of Les (Dexter) Trist and his plane. (56 photographs)
    4. Loose photographs include Trist family members 1908-ca. 1968, portraits of Margaret Trist, Margaret with Joe Jonsson, Mrs Owen Cavenagh with relatives at home in the Macdonald Valley, gravestone of Solomon Wiseman, scene of wreck of plane that crashed under command of Flight Lieutenant Hempel and Aircraftsman Trist after hitting a tree during take off at Broadford, Vic., in 1920, Pacific Flight Seaplane loading up in Southport in 1926 and Les (Dexter) Trist at Wewak with Westland Wigeon plane, ca. 1928.
