    George Omant was born in England in 1842, the son of James Omant and his wife Martha. The family settled in Van Diemen's Land in 1855 and in 1859 George took up and engineering apprenticeship in Sydney, N.S.W. In 1864 he married Eliza Rose and they had six children including Percival Omant, the father of Gladys Hamilton
