Born in England ca.1875, Charles Frederick Bowles emigrated with his family to New Zealand, then to Victoria. He studied cornet and trumpet with his father, a euphonium player, and became principal trumpet with the N.S.W. State Conservatorium Orchestra when it was first established by Henri Verbrugghen in 1916. The orchestra was re-named the New South Wales State Orchestra when it was later granted a government subsidy. Charles Bowles was a member of the first teaching staff of the New South Wales State Conservatorium. An active bandsman, he conducted many amateur bands in Sydney including the Western Suburbs, later Burwood band, Waverley Districts band and the South Sydney model band and competed as a soloist in many contests.
