  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    English novelist Henry Kingsley was the younger brother of novelist, Charles Kingsley. He visited Australia from 1853-1857 during which time he tried goldmining in Victoria and New South Wales, and was possibly a police trooper for a brief period.

    He spent time on properties in the Monaro district, NSW, and at Skipton, Victoria. His most successful novel, The recollections of Geoffrey Hamlyn (1859) is based o his experiences in Australia. Two later novels, The Hillyars and the Burtons (1863-1865) and Reginald Hetherage (1874), have Australia as part of their setting.
