  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Charles Allcot was born on 14 November 1888 in Liverpool, England. At the age of 14, he was apprenticed to Tillotson & Son Ltd. lithographers and studied at the Liverpool College of Art. From 1906, he became involved with ships and sailing, and he arrived in Sydney in 1909 aboard the Miltiades. On 13 September 1915, he married Elsie Alma Johnson. He worked as a painter, obtaining commissions to paint ships, and exhibited with the Royal Art Society of New South Wales. He gained widespread recognition through the 1920s with his series of works on the founding of the Australian colonies and worked for the Sydney Mail, writing and illustrating articles about the sea. His works continued to be exhibited through the 1960s and 1970s before his death on 13 July 1973 in North Sydney.

  • Collection history
    The print was commissioned by CSR Limited for display in the boardroom of Swiss Aluminium. A limited run of 200 prints was subsequently produced.
  • Scope and Content
    Print of "H.M.S. Investigator ; The first ship to visit Gove Peninsula, 13th-16th February, 1803." of an original painting by John Allcot. The textured print depicts the British Navy tall ship on the ocean with Gove Peninsula, Northern Territory, visible in the middle ground.
