  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Acquired from Mrs Frances Joyce King and Robert Geoffrey King in 1989. Phillip Parker King (1791-1856), son of Philip Gidley King, third Governor of New South Wales, and Anna Josepha, nee Combe, was born at Norfolk Island. Educated in England he entered the navy and became lieutenant in 1814. In February 1817 he was appointed to conduct a survey of the north and north-west coastline of Australia not previously examined by Matthew Flinders. He sailed for the colony in April in the transport Dick accompanied by his wife of two months, Harriet, the youngest daughter of Christopher and Mary Lethbridge. Between 1817 and 1822 King made five exploratory voyages. The first, from December 1817 to July 1818, commenced the survey at the North-West Cape by way of the western route and Bass Strait. King surveyed as far as Van Diemen's Gulf and Melville Island and visited Timor. During her husband's absence Harriet King lived at 'Rosehill Cottage', Paramatta, near her sister in law, Anna Maria, wife of Hannibal Hawkins Macarthur. When King was recalled in 1822 she travelled with him accompanied by their three young sons. During the voyage a fourth son was born. With King's departure for South America, Harriet King returned to New South Wakes to manage the family property, Dunheved, near St Marys. The eldest son, Philip Gidley 91817-1904), went with his father in the Adventure to survey the southern coast of South America and in 1831 sailed as midshipman in the Beagle. In later years he was involved in the management if the Australian Agricultural Company and the formation of the Peel River Land and Mining Company
