Whilst still a school student, he studied art at the Royal Art Society and the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney. In 1925, he began working as a commercial artist and held his first exhibition in 1938. On 10 February 1931, he married Bella (Billie) Oppenheim (1908-1989), with whom he had two children. During World War II, he served as an officer with the Royal Australian Air Force and, whilst in New Guinea, was an unofficial war artist. After the war, he worked as a freelance artist and became known for his series of sketches of street and cityscapes, and other aspects of life in Australia. These were published in almost fifty books issued by major Australian publishers, as well as popularised on cards, scenic folios, calendars and wrapping paper. He held exhibitions across most Australian states and his works have been acquired by the National Gallery of Australia, the National Library of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Gallery of Victoria. In 1981, he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his services to art. He died on 1 March 1995.
