  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Wlliam Wilkinson Wardell, architect and engineer, was born in London in 1823. Wardell was strongly influenced by the Gothic revival in architecture. This interest was fostered by Augustus Pugin and John Henry Newman, later Cardinal Newman, who further encouraged Wardell to convert to Roman Catholicism. Between 1846-1858 Wardell designed about 30 churches in the Gothic style. He married Lucy Ann nee Butler in 1847 and they had six sons and four daughters. On account of ill-health Wardell was advised to seek a warmer climate so in 1858 he migrated to Australia and settled in Victoria. Almost immediately upon his arrival in Melbourne, Wardell was commissioned to design St. Patrick's Catholic Cathedral. In 1859 he was appointed as Inspecting Clerk of Works and Chief Architect for Victoria. He worked for the Victorian Government until 1878 when he, with many other public servants, was removed during the purge of the 8th January, known as Black Wednesday. After this event Wardell moved to Sydney, NSW, where he took up private practice. He had commenced work on his design for St Mary's Sydney's catholic cathedral, in 1866. In 1884 Wardell took on W.L. Vernon as partner and in the 1890's also practised with his son, Herbert Edmund Wardell and George Denning. William Wilkinson Wardell died in Sydney on the 19 November 1899. After his death, Herbert Edmund Wardell and George Denning assumed control of Wardell's architectural practice. Another son, Edward Stanfield Wardell joined the Victorian Branch of the Royal Mint as registrar and accountant in 1872. In 1895, he was appointed Superintendent of the Bullion Office and in 1900, acted as Deputy Master of the Mint, to which position he was formally appointed in 1904. Mar Wardell, one of William Wilkinson Wardell's daughters, was the mother of John Joseph Wardell Power, 1881-1943, who bequeathed a large sum of money to the University of Sydney for the foundation and endowment of a faculty of fine arts. Vincent Andrew Wardell was the grandson of William Wilkinson Wardell who in 1940 compiled a history of his grandfather's works entitled, 'A review of the architecture and engineering works of William Wilkinson Wardell'
