  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Matthew (or Matthias) Darly (c. 1720-1778?), a printseller and designer, trained as an engraver. In 1756, Darly and the ornithologist George Edwards took a shop opposite the Hungerford market in the Strand publishing a burst of caricatures. Darly's wife, Mary Darly (fl. 1760-1781), assumed responsibility for the business in 1762. In 1766 the Darlys moved to 39 Strand. The shop supplied caricatures and ornament, as well as art supplies, stencils, portraits, and history prints. In the early 1770s the Darlys published satires of individuals, fashion, and manners. They invited sketches and ideas and received contributions from a variety of amateurs including Edward Topham. Prints "mocking affected macaronis and extremes of dress and coiffure" were common.
