  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Reverend Adolphus Peter Elkin, Anglican clergyman and anthropologist was born on 27 March 1891, in West Maitland, NSW. In 1915 he was ordained a minister in the Church of England. In 1929 he accepted an invitation by George Merrick Long, Bishop of Newcastle, to become the rector at Morpeth, NSW. In 1934, he was appointed Professor of Anthropology at Sydney University, a post which he held until his retirement in 1956. Due to his increased commitments at the University and other institutions, Elkin was forced to resign from his incumbency at Morpeth, NSW, on 31 March 1937. He died at the age of 88 on 9 July 1979

William Tyrrell, 1807-1879, was the first Anglican bishop of Newcastle, NSW. Prior to accepting this position in 1847, Tyrrell had been rector of Beaulieu in Hampshire, England, since 1839. On the 18 September 1847, Tyrrell embarked on the Medway, arriving in Sydney on 16 January, 1848. He was installed at the Newcastle Pro-Cathedral on 31 January 1848, and during his entire episcopate resided in Morpeth, NSW. In 1859, the diocese of Newcastle was subdivided to form the new diocese of Brisbane and eight years later a further sub-division was effected when the diocese of Armidale, NSW and Grafton, NSW was formed. Bishop Tyrrell died at Morpeth, NSW, on 24 March 1879

Josiah Brown Pearson, 1841-1895, succeeded Bishop William Tyrrell in 1880. Like Bishop Tyrrell, Bishop Pearson resided at Morpeth, NSW. In 1886, Pearson suffered a severe mental breakdown and resigned his see in 1889. He later returned to England
  • Scope and Content
The bulk of this collection is comprised of the Tyrrell and Pearson papers. There is considerable evidence which suggests that Elkin acquired these papers in the course of researching two of his books. Morpweth and I which was published in 1937 refers directly to the Tyrrell papers. The Pearson papers were given to Elkin by Lucy Pearson, and it is probable that he received these while writing the history of the Diocese of Newcastle, published in 1955, because the papers are cited as sources in the bibliography of the work
