    21 prints: etchings, engravings, lithographs. Include 'Town & Cove of Sydney / Woodthorpe, Sc. Pub. by M. Jones, Paternoster Row, March 18 1803'; and Australian views after S. T. Gill published by Sands & Kenny, Sydney & Melbourne, 1857, and after S. Prout, T. Baines, N. Chevalier, J. Carr and J. C. Armytage, published by Virtue & Co., London; lithograph titled ‘Native Police’ (mounted police), ‘Plate 3’, ‘W. B. Clarke’ in pencil on verso; etching of Sydney Harbour Bridge, signed G. Marler; etching of Old Lennox Bridge, Parramatta River, signed G. Ansdell, bound as a greeting card.

    Approx. 136 photographs: albumen and silver gelatin. Include cabinet card, carte de visite, and loose and mounted albumen and silver gelatin photographs. Some are captioned on verso. Portrait subjects include Rev. E. Smith, licensed minister Queanbeyan & Canberra; Herbert J. Ramsay, ca.1892; Lady Carrington, by Freeman; Colonial Artillery of New South Wales; Rev. J. B. W. Green. Identified and unidentified portraits include Rev. H. H. Gaud; Rev Wm Wood, incumbent of Pennant Hills; Rev P. Galliard Smith, incumbent, Canberra Church; identified and unidentified group portraits, including Coronation Cadets’ camp at Crystal Palace [1911?]; Pastime Camp, Freshwater.

    Approx. 710 postcards, ca.1905-1915. Mostly Australian views, inscribed or blank on verso. Many are addressed to G. A. King. Most are clearly commercially produced postcards. Original postcard prints have been filed with original photographs at PXA 1721 / Box 1.

    2 drawings: ink. Titled 'Black Bobs Creek Bridge, Berrima-Goulburn Road'; 'Berrima (original) Bridge, from sketch in Sir Thomas Mitchell's Field Book C 53, Mitchell Library ...'. Both drawings signed and dated H. W. Cotton, [19]20.

    7 drawings: pastel and watercolour. Include views titled ‘Byrnes Clothing Factory 1850’ (unsigned); view of colonial house initialed ‘BB’; ‘Bull’s Run’, Kurrajong, by Mrs Cranstoun[?].

    1 folder of textual material: Includes manuscript notes regarding seats at Royal Australian Historical Society (plans at PXD 1312); manuscript table of surnames relating to districts of NSW; 1 page manuscript notes about Chief Inspectorship of railways?, date stamped 21 Feb 1923; carbon typescript letter re building at 357 George Street, Sydney; admission ticket to official opening of History House, 7 February 1941; invitation to laying of the foundation stones of St Andrew’s Church, Parramatta, 8 August 1925; terms and conditions of option to purchase History House, 25/11/1957 (roneo, with mss annotations); autographed program for address by H. C. Armstrong at Sydney Boys’ High School, 25/5/1959.

    1 folder of textual material and pictorial material from a wrapper marked “Rowley” (discarded): original wash drawing of interior of a cathedral, unsigned, approx. 23 x 32.5 cm.; printed obituary of Mrs Briggs, d.27 September 1882; 6 photographs including carte-de-visite portrait of an unidentified woman, views of Sydney and school group portrait; printed list of officers of Burwood Bowling Club, 1944-1945.

    Approx. 83 loose and mounted photographs: 19th century views of Sydney and Parramatta; portraits of Alfred Henry Brown; A. J. Hare; Charles J. Love (dated May 1915); 'H's father or grandfather'; Miss Burns, Parramatta; Charles Thomas Weaver, police magistrate, Parramatta.

    5 folders (approx. 86 original photographs and copy prints, 2 drawings, manuscript notes, correspondence and cuttings). Titled “Porfolio no.7” to “Portfolio no.11”, with numbered key to contents on front covers. Probably from the collection of G. A. King: includes correspondence addressed to him. Photographs include students in cadet training ship ‘Macquarie’, 1898; Sydney Bushwalkers club Annual Swimming Carnival at Leumea, 1934; views of historic sites in Sydney, Parramatta, Windsor, Bathurst; portraits including Phil and Mrs May; planting of Prime Ministers’ Avenue, Faulconbridge, 1935; Prince of Wales visit to Sydney, 1920, including pinning one of his losing betting tickets to the coat of a member of his staff at Randwick Races, Sydney, and decorating Brigadier-General C. F. Cox. Drawings: ink drawing by Edgar A. Holloway of General Gordon Statue in Trafalgar Square; charcoal profile of Harry Sherring by Kerwin Maegraith.

    1 folder containing approx. 64 miscellaneous photographs, 5 watercolours, postcards and newscuttings removed from files in the Houison papers in January 1982, including views of Camperdown Cemetery found attached to file marked “Miscellaneous papers no.964 Camperdown Cemetery including G. A. King’s speech re. Balmain Cemetery Aug. 16 1947”; and photos removed from file marked “Bits & Pieces of History”. Includes early automobile races; bathing machines at Coogee; Cambridge Hall, Newtown; Milson’s Point Ferry Arcade. 5 wash and watercolour sketches of scenes from the journey of Burke & Wills, with instructions in pencil and brushpoint regarding publication; one signed “A. H. Burkitt”; between 12.2 x 19 cm. and 7.8 x 12.6 cm.

    Subjects include Vaucluse House and Nielsen Park, carting rabbits to market at Burrowa [Boorowa], NSW, Camperdown Cemetery, portrait of a woman with ornate bodice and headdress, “Young Miss F.”; buildings in Eden, Feb 1906, with portraits of two women and children.

    4 35mm. film negatives relating to St John’s Church and Parsonage, Parramatta, and copies from the Sydney Morning Herald, Monday, 16 December 1850.

    1 red wax seal affixed to fragment of an envelope. Seal approx 1.4 x 1.2 cm. featuring griffin motif; paper stamped “JU30 1849” in red ink.

    1 plaque : alloy, 16.7 x 13.5 x 0.4 cm. Pencil inscription on reverse reads "Cast of tablet at Kurnell ... [illegible]". Text on obverse in memory of James Cook and Joseph Banks (“This spot once saw them ardent in the pursuit of knowledge / Now to their memory this tablet is inscribed / in the first year / of / the Philosophical Society of Australasia / Sir Thomas Brisbane … / President / AD MDCCCXXI”)

    Architectural plans, realia, slides and negatives are catalogued as separate formats at PXD 1312, R 2083, SLIDES 261 and ON 527 respectively. All other pictorial and textual material is housed according to size at PXA 1721 and PXD 1311. Within PXA 1721 and PXD 1311, printed material, copy photographs and original photographs have been allocated to distinct sets as far as possible, except where these were found together as a folder of material.

    This pictorial material, together with items at Mitchell Library call nos. MPG/27, XV*/COOK/2, and XV*/CERT/2 , are part of James Keith Solling Houison papers at MLMSS 2045.

    Plaque at R 2083 was set into the face of a wooden block approx. 33.5 x 27.5 x 4 cm. with a sand-textured surface finish (wooden block discarded April 2013).
