  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Ernest Henry Farrar (1879-1952), trade unionist and parliamentarian, was born at Barnsley, Yorkshire, son of Henry and Mary Farrar. He came to Australia as an infant and was educated at Granville and Petersham public schools before becoming a shearer and later a saddler. He joined the Australian Workers' Union at the age of seventeen, in 1902 help to found the Saddle and Harness Makers' Union, and was foundation president of the Australian Saddlery Trades Employees' Federation from 1907 to 1912. Farrar was a member of the Political Labor League of NSW and President of the Labor Council of NSW (1910). Farrar was nominated to the NSW Legislative Council (1912-1952). He was appointed Minister for Labor and Industry (1922-1925, 1927-1930), Chairman of Committees (1934-1946) and President of the NSW Legislative Council (1946-1952). [ref:ADB vol.8]
