    Thomas Courtney was Associate Editor of the Daily Telegraph (Sydney) when he left Australia in 1911 as guest of the Indian Government to cover the Coronation Durbar in Delhi.

    Placid Courtney enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force and embarked from Melbourne on the HMAT Nestor on 21 Nov. 1917. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in the 23rd Infantry Battalion serving in France.
