  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Frederick B. Lamberger was born into a Jewish family in Budapest, Hungary, on 9 May 1907. In 1937 he moved to England to study English. When his passport expired, rather than return to army conscription in Hungary, he went to France, joined the French Underground, was arrested by the Nazis and liberated by the United States at the end of World War II.

Following the end of the war, he was joined in France by his older sister, Catherine Gluck and in 1950 they emigrated to Australia where Frederick worked as a tram driver. He reputedly brought the first cappuccino machine to Sydney, opening a coffee shop 'The Rialto' opposite the fire station in Victoria Street. He later ran a shop in 'The Village' in Kings Cross, dealing in fine art and books.

A prolific pen artist, he died, unmarried, in 1986.
  • Collection history
Owned by the artist's sister, Catherine Gluck (1906-2006), a Holocaust survivor and volunteer at the Sydney Jewish Museum. The drawings had been left at the Jewish Museum, possibly following an exhibition of the drawings organised, it is believed, by Gluck. Lamberger and his sister, Catherine Gluck, died without descendants.
