  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Richard Slaney (c. 1764-) was sentenced to fourteen years transportation at the Stafford Assizes in 1784. He was later sent to the Thames hulk 'Censor', age given as 20, before being transported to N.S.W. on board the 'Neptune'. Five weeks after arriving in the colony Slaney was among 194 convicts sent to Norfolk Island, arriving on 7 August 1790.

From early 1791 Slaney was allowed to cultivate a small piece of land near Sydney Town, the island's main settlement. By 1 July he had 2 acres 30 rods, and in 1792 was allowed an additional 4 acres of land. During this period he was living with Elizabeth Baker, a convict, whom he may have married in November 1791. He was still on Norfolk Island in 1796 when he was farming 60 acres. He may have left Norfolk Island some time between 1797 and 1801. The establishment of a charity in Slaney's name in Lichfield in 1827 suggests he returned to England.
