  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Arthur Martin a Beckett, surgeon, 1812-1981, arrived in Sydney in November 1838 with his wife Emma Louisa, nee Elwin. He was a member of the first Parliament in 1856. His son, William Channing a Beckett, became a member of Parliament. He married Jessie Gertrude Smith in 1884. Arthur Martin's daughter Emma Mary married in 1858 William Frederick McCarthy, who looked after his father-in-law's business interests while he was in England, 1859-1865. Their daughter, later Dame Maud McCarhty, served as a nursing sister during World War, 1914-1919
