    George Whiting (1834-1922), a Sydney landowner, was the grandfather of the donor, George L. Hobson. Eveline Whiting (1860-ca.1955) was an aunt of Mr Hobson.

  • Attributions / conjectures

    The Whiting & Hobson family portrait by John Stuart, photographer, Milson’s Point was partially identified by the Mitchell Library conservator from inscriptions on the back of mount when unframed:

    "Standing is G. B. Whiting & James Hobson. Seated Mrs Whiting, in centre Lucille her eldest daughter on her right. Blanche Hobson her second daughter on her left. Evelyn her youngest daughter standing with her dog. George Hobson sitting on his mother’s left. Nea Hobson standing on the right of her mother. -cys? Hobson standing between his Grandma and Evelyn Whiting. (?) Hobson standing between his Grandma and (?)."

    The children in the Whiting family group are also tentatively identified on another file note as Mary Louise, Nea/Una, Reginald, Dorothy, Beryl
