Charles Heaphy, V. C. (1820-1881) had a distinguished political and military career after his early employment with the New Zealand Company. He arrived in New Zealand on the Tory in August 1839 with the advance party for the settlement of Wellington, and also assisted at the foundation of the Nelson settlement. After his visit to England in 1841-42, during which time the three lithographs and his book Narrative of a Residence - in New Zealand were published, Heaphy returned to New Zealand and for a time farmed at Nelson

In 1846 he made the two exploratory trips which are commemorated by the use of his name for the Heaphy Track; in February, with Fox, he explored the Buller River, and from March to August, in company with Brunner, he traversed most of the west coast of the South Island

Heaphy was appointed Draugtsman at the Auckland Survey Office in 1848, Commissioner of Goldfields in 1852, the Provincial Surveyor in 1856. During the Waikato War Heaphy served as a volunteer, and was awarded the Victoria Cross. He represented Parnell (Auckland) in the House of Representatives, and later became a Commissioner of Native Reserves and a Judge of the Native Land Court. Ill-health forced his retirement in 1881, and he moved with his wife to Brisbane, where he died
