  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The original Halstead Press, founded in 1929 by George Robertson of Angus and Robertson, was Australia’s leading book printer for forty years.

    Halstead Press moved to new premises in 1957. The new plant was at Kingsgrove and was built May 1955 to September 1956.

    Various photographs including the inside of old plant premises with male and female staff at work out in the factory and offices. A variety of printing presses and machines, and celebrations and staff social activities.

One photo shows two staff members holding the book 'Soldiering on, 'The Australian army at home and overseas' published in 1942. Photograph showing Mr. Don Owers making up the first pages of the second edition of the Australian Encyclopaedia ca. 1956-1957. Photographs of outside front of Kingsgrove premises.

    Folder 10. Construction of pylons, metal reinforcement mesh, frame and floors of building, laying cement, construction of roof, and completion of outside of building. Dated 29 March, 12 April, August/September, 1956.

    Folder 11. Move from old premises to new premises at Kingsgove. Photographs show moving and installation of large printing machinery. Dated January, 1957.

    Folder 12. Open Day at Kingsgrove, 10 March, 1957. Photographs show families and management being shown through new premises.

    Photographs and mounted portraits of Halstead Press staff, premises at Hickson Street and Kingsgrove, staff parties, picnics and dinners. Some have captions and signatures.

    1 etching titled, 'David Scott Mitchell, etch by Lionel Lindsay from the sketches by the late Walter Syer in the possession of Wm. Dixson'. Also written on watercolour, 'Memory jotting after visit to his library when ABP came back from [?]'; 'From a note in June 1893'. Pencilled at bottom in 'No. 5'.
