  • Collection history
    The donor, Mr Francis Howard, Chairman of the UK National Portrait Society, went to school with and was a close friend of W. B. Dalley the younger. The letters and photographs relating to William Bede Dalley were left with him many years earlier by W. B. Dalley the younger. The collection was forwarded to the Mitchell Library through the NSW Agent General's Office in London in December 1948 and formally acknowledged in June 1950.

    33 chiefly carte-de-visite and cabinet card studio portraits including William Bede Dalley the elder, William Bede Dalley the younger's brothers and sisters John, Charles, Eleanor, and Mary, Mary's daughter Eileen Dalley, his first wife Pauline Fattorini and her sister, his second wife Katherine Cowell and his cousin Charles B. Martin.

    98 snapshots and views including horses and carriages, hunting, houses.

    7 silver gelatin photoprints made from nitrate negatives, showing two men digging and panning for gold in a small stream in an Australian eucalypt forest; original negative envelope marked 'Bull Flat Hut'. Prints made ca.1981 from original negatives ca.1900-1914

Views, ca.1900: Slab hut, homestead buildings and children, land clearing, in a Victorian? bush location; river and timber truss bridge, skiffs and canoe on creek; views of ships and docks, Port Melbourne?, including ‘Linnea’ at Duke & Sons Dry Docks; Freemasons Tavern and Bay View Hotel in view. Family, horses and carriages at private estate in England?; city and wharf views, Hammond & Co Canterbury Bank, Queen St in view.

    Tooled leather album. Cover dimensions 24 x 19 cm. 11 cabinet card and carte-de-visite photographs. Unidentified portraits and views, Melbourne?
