    Julian Ashton, artist, came to Australia in 1878, working as illustrator and editor for various magazines. In Sydney he was elected a member of the Art Society and trustee of the National Gallery, was in charge of the Art Society classes, became president of the Society of Artists and helped set up The Fine Arts Gallery. He was awarded the first Society of Artists Medal in 1924, and received a CBE in 1930
