The Trades and Labour Council of New South Wales, established 1871, was disbanded July 1894 and re-formed as the Sydney District Council of the Australasian Labour Federation. The Council severed its association with the Federation 1 February 1900 and the Sydney Labour Council was established, the rules being amended and the name changed November 1908 to Labor Council of New South Wales. The Eight Hour System and General Short Hour League, formed in Sydney August 1869, merged into the Trades and Labour Council of New South Wales in 1871.

Minutes
Volumes 25-41, 1943-1959, are continuously foliated and each volume contains an index. Many volumes contained additional material, not foliated, which has been left with the volumes and paged in the Mitchell Library. This material includes reports of returning officers for various Labor Council elections, minutes of several meetings of the Australian Council of Trades Unions Interstate Executive, 1954-1957, and miscellaneous items relating to matters discussed in the minutes.
