  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    From 1696-1821 the Mariana Islands, northern Micronesia were subordinate to the Viceroy of Mexico. After Mexican independence they became subject to the Captain-General of the Philippines. In 1898 Spanish rule ended when Guam was captured by the U.S.A. during the Spanish-American War. Since 1947 these islands have been administered by the United Nations as part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The records of the Spanish Colonial Government in the Mariana Islands were transferred to the Library of Congress in 1903 by the Navy Department.
  • Scope and Content
    The bulk of the material, divided into items, covers the period 1795-1898. An item by item guide at the beginning of Reel 1 is preceded by a 'Brief History', list of Military Commanders and Governors of Guam, 1668-1898 and 'Description of the Records' in English.

    MAV/FM4/4387 Reel 1 contains:
    1. Indexes of Reales Condulas sent to the Governor of the Marianas by the Audiencia of the Philippines (comp. 1787), for the years 1676-1858, 1695-1843
    2. Court decisions, 1768 - Residencia of Governor d. Jose de Soroa
    3. Reales Cedulas sent to the Governors of the Marianas by the Government of the Philippines, with index, 1856-1858
