  • General note

The arrest of John Tigney on suspicion of having murdered Gervais Dubrocca (who is pictured in one of these slides) at Sandgate "on the 3rd instant" is reported in The Brisbane Courier, 21 Apr 1890, p5 (accessed via Trove 4 Oct 2012). On Wednesday 14 May 1890, the Brisbane Courier reported on the magisterial inquiry into the murder of Gervais Dubrocca. Matthews appeared as a witness at the inquiry: "George Frederick Matthews, draftsman in the Chief Engineer's Office, Brisbane, residing with his father, Archdeacon Matthews, in Deagon-street, Sandgate, stated that on Good Friday morning he saw Dubrocca, whom he knew quite well by sight, in Jane-street shortly after 9 o'clock going in the direction of the beach."
