  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Over the last 200 years, 26 million Italians left their country in search of fortune abroad, the largest national diaspora in human history. Traditionally they migrated to America and to countries then undergoing a stage of rapid industrialization and rural development, and with a great need of unskilled and semi-skilled labour.
Italian migrants began arriving in Australia during the gold rushes of the 1850s and 1890s, and also during the twenties when the United States imposed a quota on their immigration. The largest immigration wave came after post war 1947, when the immigration policy in Australia brought about a radical reshaping of Australia’s ethnic composition.
