Percy Albert Gilbert (1883-1960) was a naturalist who specialised in ornithology and native and cultivated orchids. He authored many articles in Emu, the scientific journal of the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union (RAOU), and in other journals such as the Australian Zoologist. He was made an honorary member of the RAOU in 1958 after a fifty year association with them. He often supplied many of his own illustrations and photographs. -- Source: "Gilbert, Percy Albert (1883 - 1960)", in Encyclopedia of Australian Science (http://www.eoas.info/biogs/P004716b.htm, accesed 31/1/2012)

"Mel Fackender was associated with a variety of social, political and environmental organisations in the Illawarra district ... His concern for the appreciation and protection of the natural environment was heightened by his interest in apiary and his membership of organisations such as the Illawarra Natural History Society. He was instrumental in the development of the Wirrimbirra sanctuary at Bargo." -- Source: Unlocking Regional Memory: New South Wales Regional Archives, biographical entry (http://www.nswera.net.au/biogs/UNW0212b.htm, accessed 31/1/2012)

Wirrimbirra Sanctuary is a 95 hectare property owned by the National Trust of Australia (NSW), established and managed as a flora and fauna sanctuary. It was created in the 1960s by Thistle Harris, in memory of her husband David Stead, to preserve the original 'Bargo Brush' and Australia's flora and fauna, and promote the use and propagation of Australian native plants -- http://www.wirrimbirra.com.au/
  • Collection history
This album and photographs were given to Mr M. N. Fackender, a ranger at Wirrimbirra Sanctuary, by Mr A. J. Langdale of Yagoona, who was a friend of P. A. Gilbert. They were included in a natural history library of some 1000 books which Mr Fackender gave to the Sanctuary on his retirement in December 1975, except for these items which he gave to the Mitchell Library. The Honorary Secretary of Wirrimbirra Sanctuary, Miss K. Groat brought the items to the Mitchell Library on behalf of Mr Fackender. -- Source: ML correspondence file
