  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

HMAS Arunta (I), was constructed at Cockatoo Dockyard during the course of World War II. The ship was the first of three Tribal Class destroyers built during this time.

The Arunta began her operations on 17 May 1942 and served the Royal Australian Navy as a patrol ship and convoy escort. On 11 August 1942, she destroyed the Japanese submarine RO-33 off Port Moresby.

After the war the Arunta served the British Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan for post-war efforts between 1946 and 1948. In 1949 she ceased her operations to undergo modernisation and was not recommissioned again until 1952.

Between 1952 and 1957 the ship was mostly deployed for services within Australia waters with the exception of travels to New Guinea, New Britain and Manus.

The Arunta ceased operation in 1957 and was sold for scrap metal in 1968 but sunk whilst being towed. She had travelled a total mileage of 357,273 since her first deployment in 1942.
