  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Pascoe Fawkner, pioneer, was born 20 October 1792 at Cripplegate, England. Arriving at Port Phillip, Victoria, on 19 October 1803, Fawkner moved with his family to Hobart, Tasmania, in February 1804. On 5 December 1822 he married Eliza Cobb and in 1835 moved to Victoria. He immediately established a store and hotel, and, along with John Batman, is credited with being one of the founders of Melbourne, Victoria. In 1851 her was elected to the first Victorian Legislative Council. He remained in the Legislative Council until his death on 4 September 1869. Fawkner was survived by his wife and his adopted daughter Eliza Ann Fawkner. On 5 August 1874, Eliza Ann Fawkner married William Goldsmith Wiseman. Wiseman died on 27 May 1879. Eliza Ann later married George Springhall.
