"The centre ship is HMS Nymphe then commanded by the late Rear Admiral W. Bridges of Trawalla, Victoria. Photo taken in Sydney Harbour about 1866. Lt Cmdr T.W. Bridges (a nephew) Box 4 Green Ave Pentiaton, British Columbia, Canada" -- in pencil on the reverse

"Extract from letter from Lt. Comdr. T.W. Bridges, 11 Oct. 1960 (Corres. 1005/1960) 'Some time ago I sent you a photograph showing three Naval vessels in Sydney Harbour ... One vessel depicted was H.M.S. Nymphe which I stated to be under the command of my late Uncle Rear Admiral W. Bridges of Trawalla, Victoria. It seems that this was not correct for ... the ship under his command was H.M.S. Wolverine.' Navy lists show that H.M.S. Nymphe was in Australia 1875-9, under Captain F.G. Suttie 1875-6, and Captain S.P. Townsend 1876-9. H.M.S. Wolverine was in Australia under the command of W.B. bridges 1876-8. (Photographs of H.M.S. Wolverine are in Ships File)." -- typescript with the photograph
