  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Imogen Whyse, 1885-1977, a poetess and actress who returned to Australia in 1945, founded the Poetry Society of Australia in 1954 and edited its journal Prism. She donated her collection of period costumes, 1789-1939, to the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, Sydney, N.S.W., in 1958

    Includes many portraits of Imogen Whyse, many of which are of her performing on stage as well as posed portraits of her taken by Max Dupain in 1945 amongst others. Also 2 cabinet photographs, 1 of a woman and 1 of a young girl, taken in England, ca. 1865; family portraits; photographs of pet cats; photographs of other actors including the Children's Library Movement; portrait of Imogen Whyse's father; photograph of Anne Hathaway's cottage and photographs of Imogen White's collection of period costumes, 1789-1939, which was displayed at the David Jones Art Gallery in 1952. Collection was donated to the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, Sydney, N.S.W., in 1958
