  • Scope and Content
Full-length studio portrait of Havilah Uren in a boxing stance; inscribed in ink below image: "To my friend Jim Frobisher with everything of the best from Havilah Uren 2/7/24". "Brown Studio Wellington" is printed on the mount (indistinct).

  • General note

This photograph was originally entered in the accession register as "Portrait of boxer, possibly at Ophir". The basis for this is not known as there is no Mitchell Library correspondence file for this item and no information about its provenance; maybe it is an inference based on the location "Wellington" printed on the mount. Havilah Uren fought three matches between March and June 1924 in Wellington, NZ (http://boxrec.com/, accessed 14/12/2012), where there was also a publican called Jim Frobisher (http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/, various references). As these dates coincide closely with Uren's inscription dated 2 July 1924, "Wellington" may more likely be Wellington, NZ.
  • Conservation note

Photograph is varnished. Some abrasion and other losses in image. Some water damage to mount.
