  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Auguste Jules Meyer was born in Noumea on 15 September 1886. He arrived in Sydney on 19 August 1908 and became a naturalised British subject in May 1922. He was employed as a typist by Rylands & Sons (Colonial) Pty. Ltd., cotton goods indentors from October 1908 until March 1909. In March 1909 he joined Picard-Goulet Fils, wool and sheepskin buyers in Melbourne, as bookkeeper-accountant. In July 1910, G. & C. Kreglinger, of Antwerp, took over Picard-Goulet Fils’ Australian business. Meyer worked for the firm in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane until he was put off in May 1932. From April 1917 until July 1919 he was on war service overseas. He worked as a freelance wool salesman from May 1932 until the outbreak of war in September 1939. Meyer joined the NSW State Wool Committee in May 1940 (Sheepskin Appraisers’ office) and the Wool Realization Commission (Sheepskin Contributory Charge) on 1st July 1946 when the latter took over from the NSW State Wool Committee.

    The donor, E. M. (Ted) Meyer was Auguste Meyer's son.

    Chiefly family photographs of the Meyer and Corlass families, ca.1896-1951, in Noumea, Maryborough, Burleigh Heads, Brisbane, Cabbage Tree Creek, Mt. Crosby and Nerang, Qld.; include photographs of the Ryan, Guthrie and Langdon families.

    Mounted photographs include Alexandre & Louise Meyer, 1871-1913 (print by The Crown Studios, Sydney dated 4/4/14); Mary Langdon nee Ryan (b.1888) with Anne Guthrie nee Ryan and Patrick Ryan; Trinity Music College women's graduation group portrait; interior and exterior views of Patrick Ryan’s house, Naremburn, ca.1927; First Communion class of A. J. Meyer, Noumea, about 1898?

    24 photographs are identified by donor as “New Caledonia”, including wedding of Henri & Monique Meyer, son & daughter in law of Maxime & Adele Meyer, 1931?; Maxime & Adele Meyer & children, 1911 (Maxime became secretary of nickel company in New Caledonia).

Views of dam at Cabbage Tree Creek, 1916; surveying for Trans-Australia Railway, 1914. Includes view of "Camp on Queanbeyan River NSW 1913" with note by donor: “Vincent Corlass Centre Surveying Canberra” [adhesive note removed]. Two later photographs inside back cover, ca.1970s. Note by donor, discarded: “Cabbage Tree refers I think to the building of Lake Manchester Dam for Brisbane water supply . I think the dam was built on Cabbage Tree Ck, a tributary of the Bris. River about 1914. The Trans Railway I’m sure is the Trans-Australia”.

    a. [Kreglinger company] medal, bronze? Insignia "G & C K" in shield at centre of reverse, "August Meyer" incised at top, "1797 En Reconnaissance" inside lower border. Sailing ship motif on obverse with "Rust / Roest" at left and right. In cardboard case stamped inside lid "Baetes, graveur, ingenieur, medailleur ... Anvers"

    b. Medal, bronze? "In commemoration of the one hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary of G. & C. Kreglinger Antwerp 1797-1922" on reverse. Sailing ship motif on obverse with "Rust / Roest" at left and right. In lined leather case, "Elkington & Co. Ld. Medallists" on lining inside lid.
