  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    On 1st August 1839 a meeting was held in the Royal Hotel, Sydney and it was resolved The Hunter River Steam Navigation Company be formed for the purpose of building or purchasing steam vessels to ply the waters between Sydney and the Hunter River. Although the Prospectus was issued on 3rd August, the first Board of Directors was not formed until 29th January 1840, and this consisted of Messrs. John Eales, John Hosking, Edward Lord, William Drake, William Abercrombie, Thomas Steele, Daniel Cooper, Robert Scott and Ward Stephens. On 30th January, the first General Manager and Secretary, Mr. Matthew Whytlaw was appointed. His salary was £250 per annum until the ships arrived and increased to £500 per annum after they came into operation.

  • Collection history
    Collection presented to the Royal Australian Historical Society, 133 Macquarie Street, Sydney by Mrs Ford. The Collection was formerly owned by Dr Scott-Orr, whose wife was a daughter of Reverend Noble.

    Prints and newscuttings include:

    Newscutting of a painting by John Allcott of the 'Founding of Queensland and Birth of Brisbane (then Edinglassie), January 1825. The busy camp on the Brisbane River about three weeks after the transfer from Redcliff, from which has grown the City of Brisbane and State of Queensland. Lieutenant H. Millar (40th Regiment) and Superintendent Peter Spices are depicted in charge of convicts engaged building temporary huts for the stores and soldiers. The present Queen's Wharf is below the soldiers' tents on the extreme left, and is the site of the first landing place. Victoria Bridge now spans the river below the hut on the left.'

Coach following one of its original routes during the 100th Anniversary trip in aid of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Mount Stromlo Observatory, The Olgas, Central Australia and an aerial view of Sydney.
