John Curtin (1885-1945) was Australia’s 14th Prime Minister and is widely regarded as one of the greatest. His achievement rests on his leadership of the nation during much of World War II. Curtin died in office just six weeks before the end of the war in the Pacific.

Joseph Benedict 'Ben' Chifley (1885-1951) was first elected to a Labor seat in parliament in 1928. He lost his seat in 1931, but was re-elected in 1940. Chifley was Treasurer in the Curtin Labor government in 1941. He was elected leader of the Labor Party after John Curtin died in July 1945.
