Contains copy of newspaper clipping from the Adelaide Observer, Saturday May 26, 1894, p.30. This article comments on the "Village Settlement Views". A series of photographs taken by Dr. Cockburn during a visit by Ministers to the villages that were a part of the Village Settlement Scheme of South Australia. It is possible that these images are those taken by Dr. Cockburn.

"South Australian Premier Charles Cameron Kingston and his government introduced the village settlement scheme which would settle unemployed people from Adelaide on the land. It was hoped that those living in village settlements would become self-supporting. The initiative was well received by many unemployed. The village settlements were to work on communalistic principles and the concept of share and share alike was foremost. The Crown Lands Amendment Act including the provisions for village settlements was introduced to parliament on 8 August 1893 and given assent on 23 December the same year. A Royal Commission established that the communal system had failed and should come to an end. In December 1901 the South Australian government passed the Village Settlement Act 1901, repealing all past legislation relating to village settlements and putting into effect the recommendations of the 1899 Royal Commission. Over the next few years, the communal system was abandoned in the remaining village settlements. Lyrup alone retained its village association, but in an altered form.(Source: http://www.samemory.sa.gov.au)

Images depict village life, early brick homes, tents, pumping station, paddlesteamers, group photos of the settlers. Two images have been hand-coloured.
