    James Grant Pattison (1862-1946) was born at Hawthorn, Melbourne, son of William Pattison and Helen Margaret, nee Grant. The family arrived at Rockhampton, Queensland, in February 1865. He was well known in the Rockhampton area for his knowledge of local history and the families of Rockhampton. He wrote under the name of "Battler" in various newspapers, including the Bulletin and the Capricornian. He also wrote, "Battler's' tales of early Rockhampton" and "On the track by "Battler".

  • Scope and Content
    A collection of photographs, mainly albumen prints and carte-de-visites.

    All photographs have names, biographical and historical details on the verso. Most have belonged to James Grant Pattison. They are portraits of men, some women and a few children of the Rockhampton area during the 1860-1890 period. There is also a number of photographs of buildings and homes from the same area.

    15 photographs of police, chief inspectors, and Aboriginal policemen.

    13 photographs of the Archer family.

    26 photographs of Rockhampton town views, including boot shop, pubs, rectory, banks, hotels.

    33 photographs of homesteads, houses, and farms.

    18 photographs of women. Has typed list, titled "The Ladies, God Bless 'em".

    25 photographs of bush scenery. Has typed list, titled "Bush view, Battler".

    127 photographs of men, including solicitors, dentists, bankers, policitians, land owners, stockmen, tradesmen, farmers, and clergy. Has 3 pages of typed notes on Mr. Pattison's recollections of this men. Also includes a newspaper clipping from the "Australian pastoralist, grazing farmers' and selectors' gazette", dated November 10, 1930, pages 15-16. Article, titled, "Old days of Rockhampton" is written by "Battler" and recollects stories of the people and history of Rockhampton.
